Neuromodulation

Neuromodulation involves implanted devices that alter pain signalling, including spinal cord stimulation and intrathecal therapy. Dr Martin offers these highly selectively, for a small number of patients after detailed assessment.

Neuromodulation covers implanted approaches to pain, principally spinal cord stimulation and intrathecal drug delivery. Both are established treatments for specific, narrow indications.

These are significant interventions involving implanted hardware, and they are appropriate for a small minority of people with persistent pain. Where they are considered, it follows detailed assessment including psychological evaluation, and, for spinal cord stimulation, a trial period before any decision about permanent implantation.

Dr Martin offers these highly selectively. Whether neuromodulation is appropriate is a question for assessment, and for most people the answer is that other approaches should be pursued first.
